Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Downtown San Diego, CA
We provide independent DuraFlex chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair service with our Chimney Sweep in Downtown San Diego. What sets our DuraFlex work here apart is the Gaslamp Quarter’s shared party-wall chases – many of these 1880s – 1920s flues serve or abut a neighbor’s chimney, so anyone touching a liner has to camera the whole chase before running a brush. That’s our default, not an upsell. If you need DuraFlex service in Downtown San Diego, call (866) 670-3503 for a free estimate.
Why Downtown San Diego Residents Choose Us for DuraFlex Service
We’ve spent years pulling, inspecting, and relining DuraFlex in Bankers Hill and Downtown San Diego’s hardest masonry chases. Gaslamp lofts, converted warehouses, Victorian brick buildings, the old coal flues now running gas logs – we’ve been in all of them. That’s how we learned what the marine layer does to 304 alloy and why a loose top plate in a party-wall chase is a neighbor’s problem too.
Pete Gentry grew up in Barrio Logan, a couple miles from the rowhouses and craftsman bungalows that still dot Downtown San Diego. He learned HVAC fundamentals at San Diego City College before finding the diagnostic side of chimney work suited him better than anything else he’d tried. Two decades later, he’s cleaned and inspected hundreds of downtown chimneys and built a reputation for showing homeowners exactly what the camera saw – no pressure, just photographs and straight talk.
We’re an independent sweep shop, not a DuraFlex-authorized dealer. That matters here. Our only loyalty is to what the flue camera and a moisture meter actually show, not to a manufacturer’s parts quota. Learn more about our DuraFlex sales & service work.

Common DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Downtown San Diego
- Surface rust and pitting on 304-alloy liners. The marine layer parks itself over Downtown San Diego most mornings, and when an unused Gaslamp flue sits damp, a 304 liner will show rust years before a 316L liner would. We’ll camera it, tell you which alloy you actually have, and give you a straight answer about whether it can be cleaned or needs replacing.
- Failed or pulled liner-to-top-plate and appliance-collar joints. When a previous reline was sized loose in an irregular 1880s brick chase – and we see that constantly downtown – the liner shifts, the joint pulls, and the connection fails. Cleaning a liner with a broken connection just sends debris where it shouldn’t go, so we check these first.
- Compromised insulation wrap on DuraFlex Insulated Flex sections. Bay damp gets absorbed into old insulation wrap and it sags away from the liner. The liner itself may be fine, but an unwrapped section changes clearances and drafts differently. We’ll inspect the wrap and replace sections as needed.
- Corrosion pinholes near the bottom of the liner above a rusted damper or firebox. Coastal salt air moves through these flues and settles where air slows. The bottom third is where pinholes show up. Camera inspection catches them before you’re breathing combustion byproducts.
- Loose DuraFlex top plates and caps. A top plate that’s shifted lets rain and marine mist run down the outside of the liner, which accelerates rust at the collar – and in a shared Gaslamp chase, it also drops moisture into the neighbor’s side. This is a repair we handle as part of routine DuraFlex service, not a separate call.
DuraFlex Service in Downtown San Diego: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s what makes DuraFlex repair in Golden Hill and Downtown San Diego genuinely different from anywhere else we service. In the Gaslamp Quarter, many original chimney flues share a party-wall chase with the loft next door. That means a DuraFlex liner we’re asked to inspect often serves or abuts a neighbor’s flue – and we camera the whole chase before touching a brush, or we risk pushing debris into someone else’s fireplace. We’ve cleaned chases where a past renovation blocked one side entirely, or where a neighbor’s liner had shifted into the shared cavity and was venting into the wall. A standard sweep would have missed every one of those. In Downtown San Diego, sweeping a chimney that shares a party wall without first verifying the chase is sealed and separated is asking for cross-contamination. We don’t do it that way.
DuraFlex Models & Products We Service in Downtown San Diego
We service the full DuraFlex lineup you’re likely to find in Downtown San Diego homes: ProFlex stainless flexible liners in both 316L and 304 alloy, Insulated Flex Kits with pre-insulated sections, the Deluxe flexible relining system for wood and gas appliances, and DuraFlex chimney caps and top-plate assemblies. When a liner is still serviceable, we match DuraFlex fittings and adapters to the series already in the chase so the connection stays sound. Where the liner is too far gone, we say so plainly – we don’t patch rust-through. For parts, we use genuine DuraFlex components where they’re required and quality aftermarket caps and plates where they fit correctly. It’s about what holds up in a salt-air flue, not what’s printed on a box.

AfterDuraFlex Service Pricing in Downtown San Diego
DuraFlex chimney cleaning in Downtown San Diego typically runs $180 – $340 depending on the liner’s condition, access, and whether we’re dealing with a single flue or a shared party-wall chase. A Level 2 camera inspection usually adds $120 – $200 and is worth every dollar in older Gaslamp buildings – it’s the only way to see joint separation, hidden pinholes, or a neighbor’s liner that’s worked into your cavity. Damper repair and cap replacement run separately, and we’ll give you a number before any work starts. Camera inspection and a photo report are included with every sweep, so you see what we see. Call (866) 670-3503 for an exact quote – estimates are free, and nobody’s going to sell you a liner you don’t need.

FAQs – DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Downtown San Diego
That depends entirely on what the camera shows. We’d run a Level 2 inspection first to check for rust-through, joint pull, and whether the liner is properly isolated in its chase. If the liner is intact and merely dirty, a standard cleaning is fine. If we see pinholes near the bottom or a failed top-plate joint, replacement may be the honest answer – but you’ll see the footage yourself before we recommend anything. Call (866) 670-3503 and we’ll schedule the inspection.
The marine layer and salt air near San Diego Bay are the culprits – they keep moisture pressed against the liner’s surface far more often than in inland neighborhoods, and 304 alloy is more susceptible than 316L. When a flue sits unused, the moisture never burns off. An annual inspection catches rust while it’s still surface-level. If yours is already pitting, we’ll tell you whether it can be cleaned and coated or needs to come out.
Yes, and this is actually one of the more common calls we get in the Gaslamp Quarter. We camera the entire chase first to verify your liner is separated from the neighbor’s flue, then clean only your side. If the camera shows cross-contamination or a shared cavity, we’ll stop and show you what’s going on before any brush goes in. Nothing gets pushed into the unit next door on our watch.
Usually a repair, not a replacement. A loose top plate is often just failed sealant or pulled fasteners, both of which we can fix in one visit. But if the liner itself has shifted or the collar underneath has rusted through, that’s a different conversation. We’ll know within a few minutes of getting on the roof and we’ll show you the photos. Call (866) 670-3503 to schedule a look.
Yes, we install and service DuraFlex liners in converted warehouses and in high-rise units that have functioning or previously functioning fireplaces. Access can be tricky in both building types – some require roof work through a hoist, others have chases that run through multiple floors – but we’ve handled both and we’ll tell you upfront what your building’s access situation means for the job. A free estimate is a phone call away at (866) 670-3503.
